Cremation
Services
Cremation was originally
created to take the place of the earth burial not to take the place of the
funeral. If cremation is an option you are looking at, you need to be informed
as to the options that are available to you. A viewing and family or public
visitation is strongly recommended even if cremation is the decision you have
made. The viewing gives the family and friends a chance to say goodbye to their
loved one and accept the reality of the death. You may choose to have a viewing
in our chapel and then the cremation take place before the service in which case
we have a variety of cremation viewing caskets available to choose from.
Others may wish to use our rental casket, and have the body present for either
the prayer service and/or the funeral service, with cremation to follow. The
rental casket has a removable lining that is removed, with the deceased being
taken to the crematorium in this liner. A new liner is then placed in the
casket, therefore, although the outside of the casket may be used numerous
times, the inside is new for each family that rents it.
When time is a factor, we are able to have the casket present
at an evening service, with cremation taking place immediately following the
service, thereby, allowing us to have the cremated remains
present for the funeral service the following day.
There are times when a
family wishes to have the cremation take place before the service, and forgoes
the viewing, however, this is not encouraged. If a family does choose not to
have a viewing, for legal purposes, a family member has to perform a visual
identification in the presence of a licensed funeral director.
With cremation, there is
always the question of what to do with the cremated remains after the funeral.
Some families choose to bury them in a cemetery plot, some place them in a niche
in a columbarium, others take them home for
a time, while still others choose to leave the cremated remains at the funeral
home until they decide what they wish to do with them. Scattering of the entire
cremated remains is not recommended. While some families would like to scatter
them, it is important to realize that by scattering all of the remains, you will
not have a place to go, where you know your loved one is resting. If you wish
to scatter some of the cremated remains in a special place, it is recommended to
bury or place the remainder in a permanent place. We offer a selection of
keepsake jewelry, miniature urns and music boxes for keeping a small amount of cremated remains
with you. There are individual columbariums available through REMCO Memorials,
which can be placed in the cemetery, as well as benches, and unique monuments
that hold the remains inside of them. Come in and talk to us about the many
options available.
