Bernard Huculak

October 30, 1946 - February 3, 2012

It is with great sadness the family announces the sudden passing of their father Mr. Bernard Huculak, 65 years of Burr District on Friday, February 3, 2012 at the Lanigan Hospital. Bernard was born on October 30, 1946 to Peter and Lillian (nee Bay) Huculak in Humboldt.  He attended Pilot Grove School for his elementary education and continued his high school education at the Lanigan Central High School. After his schooling Bernard held several jobs. His job at Schenn’s Farm Supply was the most rewarding as that was where he met the love of his life Alvera Jaeb. They were married on January 14, 1967.  This union of marriage was blessed with four children. Together they began the farm in the Burr District.  Bernard and Alvera were a phenomenal team.  They could get more done in a day than many in a week. Together they operated the farm with a Butcher Shop on the side where they provided product for many people in the area. This most definitely was a family operation as everyone pitched in. During the winter, in the 1980’s, Bernard worked at Muenster Meats and assisted his brother-in-law Ron and later his nephew Dennis, driving a semi. When the children were young they always made time for camping trips and visiting with extended family.  Bernard’s favourite time on the farm was seeding. He loved to seed especially after he bought his air seeder.  Bernard was very committed to his faith and volunteered as a cantor for 25 years at St. Mary’s U.C. Wolverine Church.  Although a very dedicated hard working farmer Bernard always made time for a good steak on the fire with Alvera and the rest of the family.  Work was important but family was the most precious to him. He was the happiest with all his family surrounding him on the farm and watching the grandchildren play. Bernard always made the farm fun for the children and they loved coming to spend time with “Dede”. On December 7, 2009 his heart was broken by the passing of his love Alvera and he missed her dearly the rest of his days. With her passing he had to take on new challenges which he succeeded in such as: gardening, cooking, preserving dill pickles and continuing in the Butcher Shop. Bernard loved to visit and always had a good joke that brought a smile to many people. Bernard’s smile and caring personality will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his four children and six grandchildren: DEAN (Alyson) Huculak and family, Nolan and Shayne of Lanigan; LISA (Ryan) Morningstar and family, Kelsey, Jayden and Cally of Lockwood; BRAD (Kim) Huculak and daughter Everlee of Lanigan and RHONDA Huculak of Saskatoon; Four sisters and one brother: Dolores Leedahl of Humboldt; Theresa Huculak of Saskatoon; Bernadette Huculak of Wadena; Donalda (Ed) Bracke of Saskatoon; and Gordon Huculak of Jansen; Parents-in-law Alois and Lorraine Jaeb of Humboldt; Brothers and sisters-in-law: Glenn (Kathy) Jaeb of Fernie, BC; Carol (George) Morneau of Chilliwack, BC; Garry (Theresa) Jaeb of Edmonton, AB; and Neil Jaeb of Vancouver, BC and  numerous nieces and nephews. Bernard was predeceased by his wife Alvera Huculak (Dec. 2009); parents, Peter and Lillian Huculak; brothers-in-law: Ron Leedahl and Joseph Jaeb in infancy.  The Prayer Service was held on Monday, February 6, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. presided by Jenny Irwin with organist Dolores Hinz, scripture readers Heidi Ascott and Glenn Jaeb.  The Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. celebrated by Fr. Demetrius Wasylyniuk O.S.B. Others taking part in the service were: cross bearer Peter Huculak, scripture readers Ken Lenyk and Toni Januario, intentions Terry Potts, gift bearers Erica Thiele, Jennifer Huculak and Krystal Loyns and urn bearers Lisa Morningstar and Rhonda Huculak. Honorary pallbearers were: “All those who knew and loved Bernard”. Words of remembrance were shared at the memorial luncheon by Tom Senko. Both services took place at St. Augustine R.C. Church Humboldt. Interment will follow at a later date. Memorial donations in Bernard’s memory may be directed to St. Mary’s U.C. Wolverine Cemetery Fund or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan.

Sr. Sida Hrabchek, OSE

July 15, 1936 - January 23, 2012

“I was hungry and you gave me to eat … I was thirsty and you gave me to drink… I was sick and you cared for me” these words inspired Sr. Sida throughout her life until her unexpected death at the Humboldt and District Hospital on January 23, 2012.  Sida Hrbachek was the eight child born to Andrew and Caroline (Kubas) Hrbachek in Czechoslovakia.  In 1937 the family immigrated to Canada and settled on a farm in Mistatim, Sask.  Sida attended the Mistatim Elementary School and then applied to the Sask. Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in Saskatoon for the Practical Nursing Assistant program becoming the youngest Nursing Assistant ever to graduate.  It was while working at St. Michael’s Hospital in Cudworth that Sida met the Sisters of St. Elizabeth and asked to be admitted to the Congregation as a candidate.  She received the name Sr. Pius of the Holy Eucharist at her reception of the habit but later returned to her baptismal name Sr. Sida.  On Oct. 30, 1963 she pronounced her religious vows. She went on to receive her high school diploma at the Humboldt Collegiate and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Sask.  All of life, but nursing in particular was a service of love for Sr. Sida as she attended to anyone in need and to patients in Cudworth, Humboldt, LaLoche, Ile-a-la-Crosse, in the psychiatry department at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto or in Brazil where she served for several years with the Abbacy Mission team.  While working in Northern Saskatchewan Sr. Sida was alone to deliver a baby in an airplane and was told by the medical staff that she had a better eye for diagnosing patients than many doctors.   Her care extended not only to those who were sick but especially to those who were dying.  She spent countless days and nights at the bedside of the dying be it for family, friends, acquaintances or the Sisters with whom she lived.  In whatever convent she resided, Sr. Sida had a special care for those who were suffering, sick or dying, carrying out her ministry unobtrusively with patience, compassion and prayer.  Sr. Sida will be sorely missed by the Sisters of St. Elizabeth and her family.  In the community we remember her as a woman with a keen sense of humor, many and varied talents and extremely hard working.  She loved to cook and bake, knit and crochet, listen to music and play cards, garden and houseclean. Sr. Sida was very close to her family taking a keen interest in all her nieces and nephews as well as to the many friends she made wherever she lived - many of whom received a phone call just last week.  Sr. Sida also served as general councilor for a brief period and two terms as general treasurer, a position she held when she died.  Sr. Sida is lovingly remembered by her Sisters in community, her family Steffie and Len Lahoski of Cranbrook, B.C., Peter and Margaret Hrbachek of Mistatim, SK; Edith (Janzen) Hrbachek of Tisdale, SK; Emil and Agnes Hrbachek of Tisdale, SK; Mary and Almer Wiesensel of Cudworth, SK; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her parents Andrew and Caroline Hrbachek; her brothers Frank, Steve, Paul at 17, and Andrew as an infant; her nieces and nephews Clifford Hrbachek, Sean Weisensel, Caroline Lahoski, and Elaine Huculak.  The Funeral Mass for Sr. Sida was held on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, concelebrated by Abbot Peter Novecosky, OSB, Fr. Daniel Muyres, OSB and Fr. Bernard Stauber, OSB.  Others taking part in the mass were:  crossbearer, Quinn Schulzky; scripture readers, Crystal Hrabchek and Sherry Schulzky; prayers of the faithful, Lisa Wiesensel; and offerings, Sr. Philomena Dobmeier, OSE and Sr. Viola Bens, OSE.  Honorary Pallbearers were “all those who shared in Sr. Sida’s life.”  Active Pallbearers were Andrew Hrabchek, Anthony Hrabchek, Paul Hrabchek, Ward Wiesensel, Dean Wiesensel and Tyler Schulzky.  Interment followed in the Sisters of St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Humboldt.  Memorial donations in Sr. Sida’s memory may be made to the Sisters of St. Elizabeth Health Care Fund.  Funeral arrangements entrusted to Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home, Humboldt (682-1622).
