Ambert George Hallam

May 26, 1933 ~ July 9, 2017 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Ambert  George Hallam of Bethany Pioneer Village age 84 passed away at Bethany Pioneer Village on July 9, 2017. Ambert was born May 26, 1933 to Albert and Violet (nee Keller) Hallam. Ambert was the first baby born in the old W.H.M. Hospital in Smeaton, Saskatchewan. He had two sisters, Ella Mary Anne and Alicia who passed away soon after she was born. When Ambert was born they lived on Dad’s homestead south of Smeaton. When he started school he and his sister would walk the two and a half miles into Smeaton where he attended the old Smeaton School. Many times in the winter they would stop at the neighbours house and warm their hands and feet. In 1944 they bought a farm north of Smeaton. He then attended Elkart School. Later after they closed all the country schools, he was bussed back to Smeaton School. Ambert quit school at an early age and did odd jobs for the farmers in the district, such as stoking in the fall, picking stones and roots, helping clear the land and helping with harvest, usually on the stoking wagon or feeding the threshing machine. In 1955 he moved into Smeaton with his parents and started work at the Searle Grain Elevator. There he shovelled grain, cleaned up in the fall and unloaded coal cars in the winter. In 1965 Ambert and his parents lost their home to a fire. He then bought himself a small home and a year later it burnt inside when the stove exploded while he was at work. He then moved in with him Mom and Step-Father and lived there until August of 1967 when he became a resident at Bethany Pioneer Village. It was there that he met his wife Mary Reitz. They lived there together until her passing on October 1, 1993. Ambert enjoyed skating, fishing, curling, visiting neighbours and swimming in the Bissett Creek near his home. He always enjoyed listening to music and would often sing along. He also played the accordion. Ambert will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by three nephews and one niece: Dewayne Butterfield, Daryl (Tani) Butterfield, Dean (Theresa) Butterfield, Lori (Allan) Stadnyk and Kevin (Marina) Butterfield and their families.  Ambert was predeceased by his parents Albert and Violet (nee Bernard) Hall; sisters: Alice Hallam and Ella Butterfield.  A Funeral Service was held on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Bethany Pioneer Village - Aspen Manor, Middle Lake, SK at 2:00 p.m. officiated by Pastor John Rapp. Interment followed at Faith/Grace Lutheran Cemetery Middle Lake. Memorial Donations in Amberts memory may be made to Bethany Pioneer Village.
