Jean Margaret Carroll (Barefoot), aged 95, passed away on May 28, 2019. She was born August 10, 1923, the youngest child of John and Margaret Barefoot. Jean was raised in Edmonton and employed with both the provincial and federal governments as a secretary in advertising and travel. She moved to Saskatoon in 1968 and, following a short courtship, eloped with Frederick Harold Hopkins who originated the clown unit with the Saskatoon Shrine Club. She and Hoppy loved animals and their dog, Missy, was the center of their world. They enjoyed their involvement with the Shrine and Mason organizations until his death in 1977. In 1983, she married Derrick Carroll, also a Shriner. They did not have much time together as he died in 1986. Jean had no children of her own, but the ‘little ones’ as she called them, held a special place in her heart. She loved going to the Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings to see all the children, and special holidays at the Clavelle’s in Humboldt always meant an opportunity to spend time with Jan and Terry’s boys and grandchildren. Jean was very active in the Shrine Organization, the Order of the Eastern Star Saskatoon Chapter No. 4, Daughters of the Nile (Just Friends), and the Associated Canadian Travelers’ Auxiliary. In her younger days, she enjoyed downhill skiing, costume parties, handicrafts, and was a huge Edmonton Eskimos fan. Jean was never one to miss an ice cream social or a musical/theater production. She lived a full, happy life and had many, many friends. We would like to extend our appreciation to her cousins, Mary Ann (Jack) Anderson for their kindness to Jean over the years. And to Jean’s special friends, Linda Reynolds and Marg Gauley, who were her chauffeurs and companions .Thank you to the wonderful staff and residents of Luther Riverside Terrace for your care and friendship. Heartfelt thanks to Maria Dumitrascu who welcomed Jean to her Personal Care Home in Humboldt for a short time. To the nursing staff of Humboldt and District Hospital, our utmost gratitude for your compassion in her final days. At Jean’s request, there will be no funeral and her final resting place will be in Edmonton with her parents. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Shrine Patient Transportation Fund would be greatly appreciated (Wa Wa Shrine Centre, 2065 Hamilton Street, Regina, SK S4P 2E1).
