Leander Greuel Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Leander Greuel, 90 years of Bruno, SK, on Friday, December 20, 2019 at Humboldt District Hospital.

Leander was born on his father’s farm on November 30, 1929. His parents, Henry Greuel and Theresa Koffing, had a family of five daughters and two sons. He was a mischievous, blonde, curly haired child who wanted to be a horse or a farmer when he grew up. Thankfully, he became the latter.  He loved sports and was so proud that on several occasions he was asked to be the back catcher for Ollie Fidler and Big Jean McWillie, pitchers for the Saskatoon Merchants. He was also a great dancer, always keeping an eye out for the ladies who could do the Fox Trot, Two step, and Waltzes. His favourite music was the Saturday Opera on CBC.  In the evening it was the Dance Party – both of which would be quite loud.  In his retirement, he often read three books a week.  As well, for twenty years he belonged to a group of bridge players in Humboldt. After that, his Monday afternoons were spent playing bridge with friends Monique and Noel.  Leander and his wife Bernadette, and daughter Susan, spent time volunteering at Camp Circle O’Friends which is an outdoor summer camp for children whose lives have been affected by cancer.  Leander was educated at the Kildrum school and it was there that he met Bernadette Gerwing and they were married in August of 1959. He farmed with his father until 1962 when his parents moved to Bruno. He then farmed with his son George.  Leander and Bernadette moved to Bruno in 1987. For many years, Leander and Bernadette were the caretakers at the Bruno School.  He was greatly loved by his six children and often spoke of his son Henry who died at the age of four. He suffered a great deal of physical pain during his lifetime, especially during the last years. He served on the Kildrum Community Centre Board, the Credit Union Board, the Parish Church Council, and the Senior Citizens Board. Leander was very proud of Bernadette’s poetry and supported her passion over the years.  His family and his faith were the most important part of his life, for he believed in the goodness and mercy of a loving God.  Leander will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years Bernadette Greuel of Bruno; their six children, 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren:  George (Donna) Greuel of Bruno and family Lisa (Derek) Haeusler of Martensville and children Danica and Lincoln; Dolores (Pat) Pomedli of Pilger and family Eric Pomedli (Lynnell Olson) of Humboldt, Laura (Jon) Strem of Briercrest and children Grayson and Adelaide, Michelle (Tyler) Stumborg of Saskatoon and daughter Olivia, Emma Pomedli of Regina, and Alex (Irene) Pomedli of Vancouver and son Kaylex; Susan (Alain) Detillieux of Peterson and family Sarah (Graham) Baxter of Saskatoon and children Theodore and Simon; Esther (Vince) Nimchuk of Meacham and family Angela (Shane) Knihnitski of Bradwell and children Rowdy and Rocco, Jessica Nimchuk of Humboldt, and Vonia Nimchuk of Saskatoon; Jonathan (Lisa) Greuel of Regina and daughter Finnleigh; and William (Jodi) Greuel of Regina and family Jacob, Noah, and Madelyn. He is also survived by his three sisters Marie Dyer and Alice Boehm, both of Saskatoon, and Florence Steckler of Port Coquitlam, BC; sisters-in-law Elsie Greuel of Lively, ON, and Tarcia (Dolores) Gerwing of Guelph, ON and numerous nieces and nephews.  Leander was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Theresa Greuel; son Henry Greuel (twin to George); siblings: Helen (Arnold) Koob, Edna (Emil) Weninger, and Ben Greuel; and brothers-in-law Edwin Boehm and George Steckler.

A Prayer Service was held on Friday, January 3, 2020 at 7:30 pm and the Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at 2:30 pm. Both services were held at St. Bruno Roman Catholic Church in Bruno. Interment followed in the Parish Cemetery.
