He attended Haliburton School until the age of 13 then began working for neighboring farmers. In 1944, when his parents moved to B.C., Bert purchased the family farm and started farming on his own.  On November 28, 1950, Bert married the love of his life, Dorothy Nadiger. In the early 90's, they stated travelling to Mesa, Arizona, every winter and continued for 27 years.  It was there he became know as the bike man - fixing bikes from around the park they lived in.  He attended daily coffee row, weekly country music jam sessions at the hall and was always lending a hand for set up of the park's country store, so Dorothy could sell her jams and buns.  They made many friends from across the nation during their time there.

In 2001 they retired to Humboldt.  There he enjoyed daily coffee at A & W and spent countless hours in their yard and garden.

Bert was very community minded. He was a member of many organizations including the Haliburton Community Club and served as a trustee and chairman for the Haliburton School Board. He was an early member of the Jansen-Esk Credit Union and served on the Board of Directors for many years.
