Alfred Herman Sterner

It is with great sadness that the family announce the peaceful passing of Alfred Herman Sterner, 85 years of Annaheim, on Monday, June 8, 2026, at Humboldt District Hospital.

Alfred was born on September 3, 1940, to John and Katherine (nee Aschenbrenner) Sterner in Humboldt. Alfred was the 10th child born into a family of 15. He obtained his education at Leavenworth School. Alfred always tried to learn everything he could by researching, asking questions or reading. He was a gifted writer and spent a lot of time writing and researching things. When you read his stories, he could make you feel like you were re-living them. Alfred was very musical and loved to play the accordions and guitar. He also had a large collection of LP'S that he would play regularly. Even today he could play his records on a working record player. 

The pull of the land kept Alfred close to his roots, he remained on the family farm his whole life. In his younger years Alfred worked closely with his parents and siblings on the farm. After his family dispersed from the farm, Alfred remained and grew huge gardens and would preserve all the vegetables and fruit for the winter months. He also loved baking cakes and cooking many tasty dishes. He also loved to have an assortment of birds and animals on the farm.  He was very fond of his horses named: Binti, Cindy, Candy, Glorie, Ruby, Taffy and Felicia (from the soap opera Another World). He also had a variety of guinea hens. Alfred’s favorite was his collection of peacocks that he had for many years. The last one died in December of 2025.  

Family was important to him, he always welcomed their company at his home and often would connect by phone to share a story and see how they were doing. Alfred thoroughly loved his life on the farm; he lived his life the way he wanted to! He did not want to leave his farm and was blessed to stay there until his passing.           

Alfred will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his three siblings: Helen Hueser of Humboldt, George (Carol) Sterner of Melfort, and Dave (Sue) Sterner of Whitehorse, Yukon; and by numerous nieces and nephews.        

Alfred was predeceased by his parents John and Katherine Sterner; 10 siblings: Mary (Ben) Roenspies, Margaret (Gilbert) Albers, Agnes (Ted) Schemenauer, Catherine (Jim) Meyers, Joe (Anne) Sterner, Johnnie Sterner, Alois (Lydia) Sterner, Michael Sterner, Anna Marie (Ed) Teiber, and Adolph Sterner; one half brother John (Mary) Sterner;  3 nieces: Maré Sterner, Lori Sterner, and Sharon Sterner; 2 nephews: Bruce   Hueser and Joe Albers; brother-in-law Donald Hueser; and sister-in-law Madeline Sterner.      

A Graveside Service was held on Thursday, June 25, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Cemetery in Lake Lenore, SK, celebrated by Fr. John Abban-Bonsu. Memorial donations in Alfred’s memory may be directed to St. Anthony’s R.C. Cemetery or St. James Cemetery.
