Alice Syroteuk Obituary

Alice Mildred (nee Merkosky) Syroteuk, 92 years, of Humboldt, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, August 29, 2021, at Wadena Hospital.  Alice was born on August 24, 1929 to Nicholas and Veronica (nee Novecosky) Merkosky in the Burr District.  She obtained her education at the Mile End School.  For the next five years Alice worked as a Nurses Aid in Cudworth, Prince Albert and Tisdale.  It was while she was in Tisdale that she met this gentleman named John Syroteuk at the post office who was just passing through town.  That meeting was the destiny for the two of them to be later wed on June 22, 1954 at St. Scholastica.  This union also was blessed with eight children.  They farmed in the Burr District until 1991 when they retired to Humboldt.  Alice’s nursing skills were put to great use with her children, they all kept her busy and provided many wonderful memories.  Her domestic duties were endless, her huge vegetable gardens were always bountiful and a necessity to provide wonderful preserves for the family during the winter months.  She also worked alongside John and kept busy with milking cows, collecting eggs and many other farm duties, again providing healthy nourishment for the children.  Alice did enjoy reading, quilting, knitting, and setting puzzles.  She was always very active in her faith and lived her life honoring The Virgin Mary.   She was very proud to be presented her CWL pin (last year) for 65 years of service.  Many hours were spent at the Villa volunteering with “Spiritual Care” she enjoyed making sure everyone in their wheelchairs got to mass.  It brought so much peace and happiness to Alice when she could help someone in need.  Family was always #1 and the celebrations they had together, there was always room for everyone in her home.  Even though she is no longer with us in body we know her work on earth is complete as she enters the arms of our Heavenly Father.  Alice will be very sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her eight children 19 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren: MAUREEN (Rod) Taylor of Saskatoon and family Angela (Gabe) Hennings of Saskatoon and son Bill, Jamie Taylor (Steffen Bertelsen) of Smutts, Lisa Taylor (Jason Fege) of Saskatoon and daughter Violet and Kimberly Taylor (Ricky Andreas) of Lethbridge, AB; MICHAEL (Joan) Syroteuk and family Emma, Ryan and John all of Burr; MARVIN Syroteuk of Burr; PATRICK Syroteuk of Plunkett; JOANNE (Roman) Mesec of Toronto and family Danielle Mesec of Toronto, Matthew Mesec (Georgia Sibley) of Toronto and Nicole Mesec of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut; KEVIN (Sandra) Syroteuk of Burr and family Braeden Syroteuk (Kelly Dierker) of Melfort, Austin Syroteuk of Burr, Tanner Syroteuk (Janine Brinkman) of Humboldt and Julie Syroteuk of Saskatoon; LORIANNE (Kevin) Earis of Humboldt and family Aaron (Sarah) Earis of Saskatoon, Jeremy Earis of Waskesiu and Tyson Earis of Humboldt; JENNIFER (Marcus) Ziegler and family Makayla and Logan all of Regina; brothers and sisters: Madaline Stebbings of Humboldt, Edna (Vic) Pankratz of Regina, Clarence (Linda) Merkosky, Ken Merkosky (Sue) of Humboldt and Clifford Merkosky (Lil) of Delisle; sisters and brother-in law: Rose Simontowski, Colleen Merkosky of Edmonton, AB and Alphonse Schlosser of Saskatoon; numerous nieces, nephews, members of the Syroteuk family and many good friends.
