Clara Catharine (Schmitz) Austen

It was with great sadness that we announce the passing of Clara Catharine Austen on February 22, 2022 at Bethany Pioneer Village at the age of 94.

Clara was born to Joseph and Katherine (nee Plascko) Schmitz on April 2, 1927.  She grew up on a farm in the Little Moose area.  She met and married Bruno Austen in 1944.  Bruno immigrated to Canada from East Prussia and settled in Lake Ignace and Little Moose area where they made their home on the farm.  In 1952 they were blessed with a son, Wayne.  Clara was a very devoted mother who genuinely cared for her son, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  She enjoyed listening to music, the radio to keep up with what was happening in the world and playing cards.  Her home was always open to family and friends and she always put the needs of others ahead of herself.  She kept herself busy with the chores on the farm and worked part-time at Bethany Pioneer Village until her retirement in 1992.  In 1984, they sold the farm and moved to Middle Lake. In her retirement years she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.   Although Clare lived a long life of 94 years, she had her share of heartbreak throughout the years with the loss of her dear son, grandson and granddaughter at such an early age.

Clara will be lovingly remembered by her grandson Jared (Jenny) Austen; daughter-in-law Dorothy Austen; great grandchildren Kylie and Bennett; her sisters Rose Pongracz, Frances Coquet, Emilie Duguid, and Edna Heidecker; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Bruno of 62 years; parents Joseph and Katherine; sisters Stella, Esther, and Mae; son Wayne; and grandchildren Chad and Raelene.

The family wishes to express their greatest appreciation for the caring and compassionate dedication of the people at Bethany Pioneer Village.

Clara will always be remembered and missed forever.

A Private Graveside Service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Clara’s memory may be directed to Bethany Pioneer Village.
