Clifford Johnston Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Clifford Johnston, 94 years, on November 11, 2019 at St. Mary's Villa, Humboldt. Clifford W. Johnston was born on June 30, 1925 on the farm near Summerfield, Marshall County, Kansas to Vivan and Edna Johnston. He attended a one room school and graduated in 1943 from Summerfield High where he was active in sports. After WWII, Clifford farmed with his dad until he met and married Dorothy Schelling on February 27, 1949. They moved to St. Gregor, SK Canada where they farmed and opened Cliff’s Auto Salvage. They made many trips back to see family and friends in the USA. They enjoyed Canada’s outdoors; a cabin at Greenwater Lake and fishing. Their yard in St. Gregor was a sanctuary for deer and many types of birds including a white albino woodpecker. They grew a large garden and shared with friends. They also grew beautiful gladiolas, keeping Westminster United Church in flowers for many summers. Dorothy died in 2007 and Clifford sold his properties, moving to Fairway 14 in Humboldt. He was diagnosed with early dementia and moved to Connie’s Care Home. On Connie’s retirement, he moved to Bethany Pioneer Village in Middle Lake, then to Maria’s Care Home in Humboldt. He got excellent care and love in all the places he lived. In January 2019, he suffered a hip injury, had surgery, and moved to St. Mary’s Villa where he lived until he passed away on November 11, 2019. He is survived by his brother Gaelen Johnston in Washington, sister-in-law Florence Mulhern in Wichita, Kansas and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy; parents Vivan and Edna Johnston; sister Virgie and brother-in-law Elmer Howe.  A Graveside Service for Clifford was held on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in the Humboldt Public Cemetery. Memorial Donations in Cliff’s memory may be directed to Westminster United Church Memorial Fund.
