The peaceful death of Daniel Anthony Gerwing, 96 years, of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt and formerly of Lake Lenore, occurred on Thursday, April 8, 2021. Dan was born on January 27, 1925 to William and Anna (nee Atkinson) Gerwing at home on the family farm near Lake Lenore. He grew up on the farm and attended school at Lake Lenore. On October 15, 1952, Dan married Bernice Hackl at St. Benedict. Over the years, Dan had a variety of jobs including farmer, insurance agent, town secretary and post master. He continued with community work up to age 70. Dan was an active member of the community, belonging to the Lake Lenore Lions Club, A.A., and serving in various capacities for St. Anthony’s Church. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards – especially cribbage, and was well known for his pies that he baked. Dan’s family was always very important to him, including his AA Family. Dan will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his five children: Yvonne (Michael) Vedress, Marilyn Gerwing (Michael), Colleen (Chris) Gerwing-Ramgopal, Kathy (Chris) Linwall and Barry Gerwing; 16 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. He was predeceased by his parents William and Anna Gerwing; wife Bernice Gerwing; eldest son Mark Gerwing; daughter Audrey Hopfner; son Gerard Gerwing; three brothers: Wilfred, Richard and Fred J.; and three sisters: Loretta, Catherine and Rose. Due to COVID, a Private Family Funeral Mass will be held. Interment will follow in St. Anthony’s Cemetery. Memorial Donations in Dan’s memory may be made to Teen Challenge or Freedom Outreach (monetary as well as food, clothing or other essentials may be donated).
