It is with extremely heavy hearts that the family of Daniel Herman Muench, 91, of Humboldt, announce his passing on Thursday, December 14, 2023. Dan was born on March 7, 1932 to Leo and Angela (nee Meyers) Muench on their homestead at 11 – 38 – 22 W of 2nd. He grew up on the farm and attended Veronica School. He worked for various farmers in the area, a short time with SaskPower and a few years at Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting in Flin Flon. Dan returned home and purchased the family farm from his mom. He made a lifetime career of farming, spanning 50 years. This led to the development of his “tin box” bookkeeping system, which was something to marvel at. Besides proudly operating his own family farm, he assisted some of his neighbors once he was finished each year, and in his retirement. Dan married Alma Korte on July 30, 1960, and they raised a family of four daughters which grew to include five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In 2008, they sold the farm and moved to Humboldt. Dan was a regular on coffee row where he enjoyed visiting (bantering) with friends and discussing politics, farming and current events. Everyone had a smile on their face when Dan was around! He was an avid Saskatchewan Roughrider fan, never missing a game, even though he projected a loss after the opening kickoff virtually every game. Dan was known for his great sense of humor and all who knew him will remember Dan for his ready wit, charisma and his table pounding card-playing style. Dan was a philosopher at heart. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, never missing an opportunity to boast about them to anyone who would listen.
Dan will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 63 years Alma Muench of Humboldt; their four daughters, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Roni Muench of Saskatoon; Ellen (Aaron) Lukan of Humboldt and family Robyn (Sean) Moore and children Oliver and Myelle of Humboldt, and Avery Lukan of London, ON; Susan Muench (Chris Lafleur) and family Liam and Eli Lafleur, all of Saskatoon; and Amanda Muench and daughter Zoe of Victoria, BC; siblings: Cyril (Marie) Muench of Creighton, SK, Terry Wiesner of Humboldt, and Dave (Lyla) Muench of Plunkett; sister-in-law Carol Muench of Calgary; in-laws of the Korte family and numerous nieces and nephews. Dan was predeceased by his parents Leo and Angela Muench; brothers: Bert Muench, Leo Muench, and Al Muench; brother-in-law Dennis Wiesner; sisters-in-law Velma Hewetson, Connie Muench; and in-laws of the Korte family.
The Funeral Mass for Dan was held on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt. Interment followed at St. Augustine Columbarium. Memorial donations in Dan’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Villa Foundation.
