Doreen Elizabeth (Engele) Szautner

It is with great sadness the family of Doreen Elizabeth Szautner (nee Engele), 78 years, of Muenster, SK announce her sudden and unexpected death on Friday, September 22, 2023.

Doreen was born on September 6, 1945 in Humboldt, SK to her parents Albert and Anna Engele.  She grew up on a farm near Carmel, where she also attended school.  She enjoyed growing up alongside her many brothers and sisters.

She began her career at the hospital in Humboldt. It was during these couple years that she met the love of her life, Kevin Szautner.  On July 29, 1967 they were married in Carmel, SK.  After getting married, they moved onto the place they call home, the family farm near Muenster.  Doreen enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom, raising their one son Corey and being a farmer’s wife.

It wasn’t until 1985 that she took on a career outside the home, working in the Kitchen at St. Peter’s Abbey where she would remain for 23 years.

While both working at the college and after she retired it was important to Doreen to be close to her 3 grandchildren, Braunson, McKenna and Kaylie so she took on being a full-time grandma helping with childcare and enjoying the many times they would stay at the farm for sleepovers.  She spoke of these years often and cherished the many memories that were made.

She also enjoyed when friends and family would come by to visit for a coffee, as she could set out some of her amazing baking.   She enjoyed playing a game or two of Rumoli and card games with them as well.

Doreen was diagnosed with Scleroderma over 20 years ago and began a long hard path of struggles and pain that she fought through with such dignity, grace and bravery.  It took away many things from her, however she continued to see the best in life and fought through it until the day she left us.

Doreen will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her husband of 56 years, Kevin Szautner of Muenster; one son, Corey Szautner (Penny) of Saskatoon; and three grandchildren: Braunson Mazoka (Katie Arnelien) of Ottawa, ON, McKenna Garvie (Matthew) of Whitehorse, YT, and Kaylie Szautner  of Saskatoon; many brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews on both the Engele and Szautner sides.  She was predeceased by both sets of parents as well as one brother,  four brothers-in-law, and one sister-in-law.

As per Doreen’s wishes, there will be no funeral service.
