Edward Hinz Obituary

A recording of Edward's Mass will be available to view from December 13 - January 13.  The link is below the obituary.

Edward Joseph Hinz was born in Humboldt Saskatchewan, on November 12, 1936, the 6th child born to Leo F. and Catherine (nee Nenzel) Hinz.  He was able to attend Monastery school in Muenster along with his siblings by staying at Grandma Nenzel's place. He learned to play the violin at a young age and was proud that he even played for a local Christmas concert. Ed had a series of unfortunate events occur that changed the course of his life but neither diminished his joy in living. The first, being hit on the hip playing baseball at the age of 12, which resulted in a lifelong limp, despite his father and him traveling to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN for surgery. He attended St. Peter‘s College for high school.  Several years later while helping his father saw logs into stove wood, his sweater and arm were caught in the shaft, and he broke his right arm.  He took an electrical technology course in Moose Jaw and worked for SaskTel for a couple of years.  Later, he joined his sister Cathy at university in Saskatoon for teachers training. He taught high school math and physics in LeRoy for 19 years and was loved by his students.  Ed resided in Leroy for two years; however, when his father died, he returned home to look after his mother until she passed in 1984. He farmed with his brother Philip and the assistance of neighbors who helped with the combining.  In 2001, his sister Marcy who was beginning her journey with Alzheimer’s came to live with him. He looked after her for seven years until she needed to be placed at St. Mary’s Villa in Humboldt. During his time with her and thereafter he wrote a book of poems published in 2004, titled Echos Within My Soul. This humble man was so pleased with this book that he wanted each public library in Saskatchewan to have a copy. He delivered most personally as he loved to drive his truck over the entire province. Ultimately, another unsuccessful hip surgery to eliminate the limp eventually resulted in his becoming bedridden. His brother Phil provided care until it was necessary to move him to the same center where his sister Marcy spent her last years. He received wonderful care for five years at St. Mary’s Villa.  Ed contacted pneumonia and after a short hospital stay he passed quietly on December 8, 2025.

This history does nothing to tell the story of this sweet humble, generous man who never married and therefore never had his own children. His   siblings, nieces and nephews, along with neighbors and friends who were in need, became his family. There is no doubt that “Uncle Ed” changed the world with his generosity, care and love and he will be dearly missed.

He is survived by sisters Catherine Bozynski, and Patricia (Woodward) Burbank; brother Philip (Mona) Hinz; sister-law Verla Hinz and numerous nieces and nephews.  Ed was predeceased by his parents Leo F. and Catherine Hinz; sisters, brothers, sister-in-law, and brothers-in-law: Aurelia (Ernest) Hartle, Marcella Hinz, Francis (Anne) Hinz, Leo A. Hinz, Eugene Hinz, Bernard Hinz, George Hinz, and Richard Bozynski; and grand nephew Joel Hettrick.
