Sukut, Elizabeth “Betty” Louise
July 13, 1930 – August 16, 2024
Betty Sukut (Wachs) was born on July 13, 1930, at Lanigan Saskatchewan. Betty was the youngest daughter of Richard Lewis Wachs and Alice Wachs (Steenson-Dunbar). Richard Wachs was born in Germany and Alice was born in Scotland. Both Richard and Alice immigrated to Canada and the United States respectively. Richard settled in Lanigan, Saskatchewan, married and had 3 sons: Richard (Dick), Arthur (Art), and Paul (Pete). His wife died of illness sometime after. Alice immigrated somewhere in Washington State, married and had a daughter. Alice’s Husband died from the swine flu around 1918. Alice and her daughter Dolly moved to Lanigan, Saskatchewan where Alice took a job as a waitress at Crafts Café. Then, Richard Wachs and Alice (Dunbar-Steenson) married and had three children Kenneth (Ken), Douglas (Doug) and Elizabeth (Betty). The Wachs family grew up on a small farm just west of Lanigan. Betty attended Lanigan Public School and went to work at the local grocery store for a few years after graduation. Betty then attended nursing college in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and went to nurse at Rosthern Hospital, where she would meet her husband to be. Elmer and Betty married in Lanigan on July 4, 1956. They raised three children together, Jeffrey, Lori, and David. Betty and Elmer were avid curlers and were staple members of the Fort William Curling Club in what is now Thunder Bay, Ontario. Later they were members of the Granite Club in North Bay, Ontario. Betty and Elmer lived in North Bay from 1964 to 1980. The family moved to Regina in the summer of 1980. Betty worked at Pioneer Village caring for senior residents, while Elmer worked at Guaranty Trust and TD Bank. They both retired in the mid 1990’s and moved to Lanigan, and then later on to Humboldt, Saskatchewan. Elmer passed away on November 30, 2014. Betty remained living in Humboldt until 2019. In July of 2019, Betty moved to Regina into a senior’s community complex known as Green Falls Landing. She spent 5 years there enjoying all the varied entertainment, bingos and playing canasta with her friends. Betty passed peacefully in her sleep on August 16, 2024.
Betty is survived by her brother Doug Wachs (Chemainus, BC), her sisters-in-law Lily (Ken) Wachs (Saskatoon, SK), Vilma (Art) Sukut (Saskatoon, SK), and Elaine (Lawrence) Sukut (Kamloops, BC); her son Jeff Sukut, wife Shelley and grandchildren Taylor and Jessica (Regina, SK); daughter Lori Donaldson, husband Jim, grandchildren Steven (Coalhurst, AB), Chelsy and great grandchildren James, Liam and Carson (Picture Butte, AB); and son David Sukut, wife Leah and grandson Reeve, (Winnipeg, MB).
