The family of Gary Penner, 82 years, of Humboldt, is sad to announce his passing on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon. Gary was born on April 7, 1939 in Swift Current, SK to Peter and Katherine (nee Janzen) Penner. The family moved to Calgary, AB a few years later and this was where Gary attended school. He completed Grade 11, worked for a year in a bank and then went back to finish high school. Gary then attended Eston Bible College where he took a three year program. Gary met Betty Gammie and they were married on November 9, 1963 in Melfort. He began his ministry work in The Pas, MB where he worked as an assistant pastor, mostly involved in the youth programs at the church. Over the next ten years, they moved around the area, spending time in Flin Flon and Cranberry Portage as well. They spent a couple of years in Winnipeg, doing the same work and then back to northern Manitoba for a short time before moving to Hudson Bay, SK. After a few years, they moved to Lindsay, ON where they would spend the next 15 years, in and around the area. Besides pastoring, he started a Christian School and Bible School and as they grew in size, were moved to nearby Selwyn, ON. Gary and Betty moved to Orillia, ON where he assisted at a church and also worked at Christian Horizons, a special needs group home for five years. They returned to Saskatchewan, moving to Pangman, where he was the pastor at the Abundant Living Church. In October 2020, they moved to Humboldt where he was assisting at Living Word Church International. Over the years, and while working, Gary obtained a Doctorate degree in Theology. His main focus throughout all of his years of pastoring was working with the children and youth. He enjoyed playing sports with the youth and watching hockey and football on TV. Gary was a pilot and very much enjoyed flying whenever he could. He loved to travel, especially on mission trips, spending time in Africa, Mexico, Taiwan and China. Gary truly loved the Lord, his life and his family. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of close to 58 years, Betty Penner of Humboldt and his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren: Daniel (Jody) Penner and family Olivia Penner (fiancé Ryan Brock) and Joseph Penner, all of Mounds, OK, USA; his siblings: Ginny (Lionel) Batke, Mildred (Henry) Gerbrandt, Cliff Penner (Marion Bird), and Kathy Penner; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his infant son Joshua Penner; parents Peter and Katherine Penner; and siblings George, Eva, Lil and Ann. The Celebration of Life Service for Gary was held on Friday, September 17, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Living Word Church International, Humboldt. Interment followed in the Humboldt Public Cemetery. Memorial donations in Gary’s memory may be made to the Living Word Church International.
