Harold Mierau Obituary

“Top of the morning!”  That was Harold’s greeting whether you were a stranger or a friend for years.   Everyone would agree that Harold had the gift of connecting with people.  You never stayed a stranger for long and the greeting soon changed to “You’re the greatest!”

Harold was born Sept. 30, 1939 in Hawarden Sk to Henry and Katherine (nee Nickel) Mierau.  He spent his childhood on the family farm west of Watrous growing up with his three brothers Alvin, Dan and Elmer.  He attended high school in Watrous and was proud to hold a record in the mile run (5.18 minutes).  After high school, he took a job trucking fuel to farmers and then driving school bus.  He met Jeanette Brandt in 1961.  They were married July 27, 1963 (even though he hit her in the head with a golf ball). Harold changed jobs to be a grain buyer and for the next 10 years this position brought him and Jeanette to a number of locations in Saskatchewan. In 1974 Harold and family moved to Drake and he started working at the potash mine in Lanigan.  He worked on a construction crew underground for 26 years, retiring in 1999.  In 2014 Harold and Jeanette decided to spend their retirement years in Humboldt.  They enjoyed many years camping with family.  Special vacations included Cayman Islands and Mexico as well as bus tours to Eastern Canada and Branson, Missouri USA.  Harold could always be seen around the community biking, walking, skiing and playing pool.  At home he could be found in his favourite chair watching any sporting event.  Harold was diagnosed a year ago with Alzheimer’s Disease.  He passed away peacefully Feb. 18, 2020 at the Lanigan Central Parkland Lodge with Jeanette at his side.

Harold is predeceased by his parents (Henry and Katherine), parents-in-law (Karl and Wilna Brandt), infant twin brother Walter, brothers Elmer and Alvin, sister-in-law Ione Mierau, brother-in-law John Nixon, and niece Chanda Mierau (Jordan Van de Vorst, Kamryn, Miguire).

Harold is lovingly remembered by his wife Jeanette and their four (4) children, 11 grandchildren and one (1) great grand daughter: Ramona (Tim Fonsted) and her children Janine, Briar, and Derrick; Shannon (Germain Mallette) their children Stefan, Dominick, Geremie (Natalie Beaurivage), and Gabrielle; Lyzanne (Rod Friesen) their children Kenzie and Taylor; Garnet (Jennifer Boyle) and his children Birch (Cailie Drummond and their daughter Amara) and Lindsay.

Harold, your family and friends bid you farewell with “You’re the greatest!”

A Funeral Service for Harold was held at the Drake Community Centre on Saturday February 22, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. celebrated by Jeanette Warrian. Memorial Donations in Harold’s memory may be directed to Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan.
