It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hazel Wentz (nee Gammie) on Monday, February 14, 2022. Hazel was born on August 4, 1925 in the Howat district near Lockwood to Alexander and Violet (nee Haigh) Gammie. She grew up in the Howat district and received her education at the Howat school. She married Roy Wentz on October 23, 1947 in Wynyard. They spent the next 35 years farming in the same area where they grew up. In 1982, they retired and moved to Humboldt. Hazel was a member of the Haliburton Community Club and the Lockwood United Church while living on the farm and Westminster United Church in Humboldt following their move to town. Hazel’s interests were varied, her and Roy enjoyed dancing and for many years traveled the province taking in many Square Dancing events. She enjoyed playing cards with friends, visiting family and friends, cross word puzzles, gardening , bowling, curling and baking. Hazel will be sadly missed by her two sons, five grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren: Reg (Sharon) Wentz of Humboldt and their family Michelle (George) Flemming and children Maren, Ben and Ava of Calgary and Shawn (Deanna) Wentz and children Makayla, Trinity and Austin of Bonnyville, AB; and Larry (Carol) Wentz of Calgary and their family Nicole (Kevin) Kronberger and children Dylan and Kaitlyn, Tricia (Steve) Grubbe and children Jayden, Jordan and Jorjia, and Andrea (Lorenzo) Cortes and children Dominic and Marcus, all of Calgary; one sister Irene Forner of Invermere, BC; special nephew Barry (Ruth) Gammie of Moose Jaw, who Hazel and Roy helped raise after his mother passed away and numerous other nieces and nephews. Hazel was predeceased by her husband Roy Wentz; parents Alex and Violet Gammie; six sisters: Mary (Ernest) Worley, Jeanne (John) Chute, Marion (Ernest) Wilhelm, Anne (DeVon) Wentz, Nellie (Abe) Friesen, Alice (Ken) Kane; brother Maurice (Anne) Gammie and brother-in-law Harvey Forner.
The family wish to express our greatest appreciation for the caring and compassionate dedication of the people at St. Mary’s Villa. The team there did everything in their power to provide quality in life and respect in death, and for that we are eternally grateful. Contributions in memory of Hazel can be made to St. Mary’s Villa Foundation Inc or Humboldt District Hospital Foundation. A Private Funeral Service for Hazel was held on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. from Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Jack Robson. Interment followed at Lockwood Cemetery.
