Jacob "Jack" Henry Marksteiner

Jack passed away with family at his side on Monday May 11, 2026, at the age of 86.

Jack was born on May 29, 1939, in Humboldt, SK to John and Mary (Zimmer) Marksteiner. He learned to drive the tractor at age nine and spent the summers helping his uncle on the farm. He attended the Bright Valley School until Grade 8 and then stayed home to help on the farm. During the winters, he worked various jobs in Port Alberni, Tobin Lake, and around Lake Lenore. He also worked on the Diefenbaker Dam project on the South Saskatchewan River.

He fell in love with Lorraine Gallays, and they married on December 28, 1964. They moved to the farm where he’d grown up, and they raised their family there. He remained close with the Zimmers and the Schweighardts, sharing many happy celebrations with them.

Jack was a founding member of the Humboldt St Elizabeth Hospital Foundation Board. He was also very involved with the Lake Lenore Lions Club and the Lake Lenore Knights of Columbus. He spent many hours volunteering at the Lake Lenore Curling Club and skating rink.

Jack was an outdoorsman at heart. He found joy in hunting, fishing, camping, waterskiing, downhill skiing, and snowmobiling. In his younger years he played hockey and enjoyed many years of curling and golf. He loved to travel, coming home with stories and slide shows that captivated his children. He loved dancing, playing cards and spending time with friends and family. Music and winemaking were just two of his many interests that he enjoyed sharing with the people in his life. 

Jack and Lorraine moved to Humboldt in 2017 but that did not stop him from getting out to the farm as much as possible. He continued to help with the harvest until the age of 84.

Jack is survived by his loving wife Lorraine; his children Cyndy (Paul), Nicki (Joel), and James (Shella); his grandchildren, Kyle (Kaitlin), Korbin (Megan), and Jacob; his great grandchildren Olivia, Aspen, Merella, Maisie, and Harrison; his siblings Anna (Jim), Monica (Ron), and Jerry (Maryann); and his sister-in-law Marilou (Sylvester).

He is predeceased by his siblings John Jr, Rosemary, and Sylvester; his brother-in law Wilfred (Anna); and his nephew Bill.

Everything about Jack was big, his heart, his love, his sense of adventure, and his unmistakable laugh. He was known for his integrity, his generosity, his sense of humour, and his warm smile. He leaves a Jack sized hole in the hearts and lives of those who loved him.

A Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 10:30am at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt. Interment follow in the St. Augustine Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Humboldt District Health Foundation: General Equipment Fund.
