Lia Marie Suchan

It is with deep sadness and love that the family of Lia Marie Suchan 67 years of Humboldt announce her passing on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at St. Mary’s Villa with her family by her side.

Lia was born on October 1, 1958, in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, to Harold and Antonia (nee Duerr) Hergott.  Lia was a bright and determined child from the start.  She attended St. Augustine and St. Dominic elementary schools, notably completing Grades 1 through 3 in just two years.  During elementary school she was involved in 4-H, figure skating, and swimming lessons.  In her teenage years Lia was involved in drama, cheerleading, volunteered at the hospital and Special Olympics while she attended Humboldt Collegiate Institute, graduating in 1975.

Following graduation, Lia began her working career with a summer position at the Humboldt Tourism Booth, later moving into banking.  She worked with Humboldt Credit Union, Saskatoon Credit Union, and eventually returned to Humboldt, where she became one of the first employees of the Bank of Montreal in the community.

On July 21, 1979, Lia married the love of her life, Michael Suchan.  Together they built a life centered on faith, family and community.  After becoming a mother, Lia chose to remain at home to raise her children, a decision that led her into the work for which so many came to know and love her.  She opened a daycare in her home and, for over 30 years, lovingly cared for children from numerous families.  Lia had a special gift with children and provided not only exceptional care, but also comfort, encouragement, and a sense of belonging to all who entered her home.

Lia’s family was always her first and greatest priority.  She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who took immense pride in supporting her children and grandchildren in all of their activities.  She and Michael travelled throughout Saskatchewan, across Canada, and into the United States to cheer them on and share in the moments that mattered most.  Whether in happy times or difficult ones, Lia was always there with a warm hug, kind word, and unwavering love. 

She found joy in many simple and meaningful things.  Lia loved crafting, sewing, gardening, cooking, travelling, hiking, biking, and going for walks.  Her yard was one of her happy places, and she was well known for the care she put into her home and the meals she shared with those she loved.  Her homemade pizza, buns, and many other special treats were enjoyed by family and friends alike.  She also had a deep love of music, playing the French Horn with the Little German Band and singing in the St. Augustine Choir, St. Peter’s Chorus, and the Marysburg Choir.

Lia also gave generously of her time in service to her community.  She was a member of St. Augustine Parish Council, served as an executive member of the German Heritage Society, was involved with the HCI reunion committee, and supported summer Bible Camp for children, among many other community efforts.

Lia will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her husband of 46 years, Michael Suchan of Humboldt;

Three sons: Brett (Jillian) and their children Camden, Easton and Jovie of Humboldt;

Braden (Lauren) and their children Blake, Kellen and Maddux of Saskatoon; and

Landon (Jodi) and their children Elliot, Brooks and Wells of Martensville.

She is also survived by her siblings: Bruce (Kim) Hergott, Laureen (Byron) Siemens, Louanne (Paul McLaughlin) Jackson, Dave (Kim) Hergott, Dan Hergott and Russell (Terri) Hergott, as well as many nieces and nephews; and by members of the Suchan Family.

Lia was predeceased by her parents Harold and Antonia Hergott; and her brother Doug Hergott.

Lia will be remembered for her loving heart, her quiet strength,

her deep devotion to family and the care she so freely gave to others. 

Her kindness and warmth touched many lives and e memory will be treasured always.

A Funeral Mass was held at St. Augustine R.C. Church Humboldt on Thursday, April 16, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. celebrated by Fr. Colin Roy.  Interment followed at the St. Augustine R.C. Columbarium Humboldt.  A recording of the mass will be available to view on the funereal home webpage from April 16 – April 30, 2026. Memorial donations in Lia’s memory may be directed to St. Mary’s Villa Foundation.
