The passing of Mary Oucharek, age 94, occurred on Friday, December 27, 2024, at Central Parkland Lodge in Lanigan. Mary was born in the Donwell District near Canora on December 4, 1930, the second of seven children. She married John Oucharek on November 10, 1949, where they farmed in the Ebenezer District until 1976 when they moved to Yorkton. Mary was a hard-working farmer’s wife – milking cows, feeding livestock, and weeding a huge garden. John passed away in 1990, and Mary remained in Yorkton until it became necessary for her to move into long-term care in 2021.
Mary enjoyed reading, bingo, casino outings, fishing, gardening, going for Sunday drives, as well as travels to Prince George, Alaska, Disneyland, the Grand Canyon, and numerous road trips to Alberta and BC. Her greatest joys were the times she spent with her children, grandchildren, and her great grandchildren, making scuffles, garlic dill pickles, perogies, and many other Ukrainian dishes, but especially her cream chicken, a family favourite.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, John and Anastasia Mosiondz, her husband John Oucharek, son Robert Owens, daughter Marie Lau, as well as her brothers Metro and Paul, and sisters Helen and Rose.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories her 2 daughters – Bonnie (Harold) Falkenberg of Calgary and Maxine (Jim) Moore of Humboldt; daughter-in-law Deborah Owens of Calgary; and son-in-law Dick Lau of Calgary. She was Grandma O to 8 grandchildren: Ryan, Jessica, Kimberly, Jonathan, Joshua, Jacob, Sean, and Aaron; and Grandma Baba to 14 great grandchildren: Gus, Ben, Beckett, Mason, Maddox, Issac, Christopher, Olivia, Caitlin, Keeva, Bodhii, Oliver, Mathilde, and Myelle. She will also be remembered by her brother Mike (Leona) Mosiondz and sister Kathy Bugoy, all of Regina, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Graveside Service was held on July 26, 2025 at Memorial Gardens, Yorkton. Memorial donations in memory of Mary can be directed to Multiple Sclerosis of Canada – SK Division or Lanigan Hospital Lodge Auxiliary.
