Melvin "Mel" Stroeder Obituary

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Melvin Stroeder on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at the Humboldt District Hospital. Mel was born on February 10, 1939 to Anthony and Mary (nee Albers) Stroeder in Humboldt and was the fourth eldest in a family of 18. Mel was educated at Marysburg School. On July 5, 1966 Mel married the love of his life Josephine Moellenbeck. They were blessed with two children, Susan and Tom.

Mel had many jobs in his life, he worked at Humboldt Flour Mills, Brockman Enterprises and was the owner of Sunnyside Grocery, but his    greatest passions were driving truck and auctioneering. He was an excellent auctioneer which led him to be inducted into The Auctioneer’s Hall of Fame. Mel enjoyed spending time with friends whom he cared for greatly. He was the best man at 9 weddings and has 13 godchildren. He was an avid volunteer for his church and the wreath auction, including being a volunteer firefighter. In his retirement Mel enjoyed driving his FORD truck (Black Beauty) around town, checking up on friends, and keeping up to date on what was going on around town. Mel’s number one love, however, was his family. He always put his family first and he was very thankful for everything he was able to give them. Mel was especially proud of his two grandsons, Jamie and Jordin. He loved that they shared his passion for the outdoors, hunting, and fishing. He was always up for a game of cards, his favorites being 31 and rummoli. Jamie and Jordin remember always receiving cards with money hidden creatively inside.

Mel is survived and loved by his wife of 54 years JOSEPHINE (nee Moellenbeck) Stroeder. His daughter Susan (Jerome) Dunne of Humboldt; and son Tom (Frances) Stroeder and his two special  grandsons, Jamie and Jordin of Yellowknife, NT. His six sisters Grace Bautz, Ruth (Benno) Barlage, Millie Hofmann, Karen Ferguson, Ann Zelle, Judy (Paul) Ulrich; three brothers Kenny Stroeder, Kevin (Allyson)  Stroeder, and Tony (Sandy) Stroeder; sisters-in-law Janet Stroeder,   Christine Schewaga and brothers-in-law Ed Bautz, Wilfred (Joan)  Mollenbeck, Robert (Tracy) Mollenbeck, and Werner (Olga) Moellenbeck; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Mel is predeceased by his parents Anthony & Mary Stroeder; parents-in-law Joe & Clara (nee Trueby) Moellenbeck. His six sisters, Marie and Elizabeth in Infancy, Virginia (Arnie) Thimm, Mary (Art) Lamping, Nettie Stroeder, Marina Stroeder; two brothers, Randy Stroeder and Bob Stroeder; and four brothers-in-law Roger Zelle, Ray Hofmann, Cam Ferguson, and Fred Schewaga.

A Funeral Mass for Mel was held on September 22, 2020 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church. Interment followed at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mel’s memory may be directed to Humboldt District Hospital Foundation or STARS Foundation.
