Norma Gwendolyn (nee Cooke) LeVesconte

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Norma LeVesconte on Friday, June 12, 2026, at Lanigan Hospital, after a brief illness. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.              

Norma was predeceased by her husband Ivor, son Dan, brothers Gordon, Harry, and Alan Cooke, and son-in-law Dave Nixon. She is survived by her sister Margie Cooke of Edmonton; sister-in-law Patricia LeVesconte of Innisfail; daughter Claire (Murray) Gibney of Lanigan and family: Erin (Don) Davies & family of Lloydminster, AB, Neil (Nadine) Gibney & family of Humboldt, SK, and Dave (Jocelynn) Doell & family of Dundurn, SK; daughter Lois LeVesconte (Dave Nixon) of Edmonton, AB, & daughter: Anne MacGougan of Summerside, PEI; son Alan (Liliana) LeVesconte of St. Albert, AB, & family: Daniel (Brandie) LeVesconte & family of Spruce Grove, AB, and Carol LeVesconte (Chris Blomquist) & son of Thunder Bay, ON. Norma considered the stepchildren of her kids her bonuses: Julia (Tanner) Dachyshyn & family of Edmonton, AB, Oliver Stefan of Ft. McMurray, AB, Charlotte Nixon (Adam Mailman) of Calgary, AB, and Philip (Contessa) Nixon & family of East Selkirk, MB; as well as 12 (plus 5 bonus) great grandchildren.      

Norma was born on May 19, 1935, in Innisfail, AB. She was the eldest daughter and third of five children born to John Perry Cooke and Ethel Estelle Richardson. She was raised in Innisfail, where she attended school. After completing grade 11, she moved to Calgary where she worked in the Alberta Wheat Pool in the mail room. There she met Ivor LeVesconte. They married in Innisfail on December 17, 1954. Together they lived in Calgary where Claire & Dan were born. Norma moved to Innisfail while Ivor was in basic training for the navy, this is where Lois was born. Ivor was then stationed at CFB Esquimalt, so the family moved to Victoria, BC, and it was there that Alan was born. After 10 years with the navy, they moved to the prairies where they settled in Lanigan, SK, where they raised their children and lived the rest of their lives.            

Norma was an avid reader all of her life, a collector of Snow White memorabilia (the first movies she saw in the theater with her dad), Canadian stamps, paper dolls, and miniatures. She was active in the Miniature Club in Saskatoon, attending several conferences with fellow enthusiasts. Norma was a talented crafts person, enjoying crochet, knitting, petit point, needle point, and cross stitch. She also made many miniatures, as that was one of the real passions she had.  Many of these she had to give up as she began to lose her eyesight to macular degeneration, however never stopping things including puzzles. Those hands needed to keep busy!    

Norma was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, serving as President of the Ladies Auxiliary in the early years. She was also an active member at Knox United Church in Lanigan. She enjoyed bowling, curling, golfing, and as an avid armchair athlete, enjoyed many sports. Norma & Ivor always supported the local hockey team and travelled to many of their games through the years, as well as supporting their local community and grandchildren whenever possible. Norma was able to enjoy time with her great grandchildren as well. Norma had a sense of humor, a strong willingness to participate whenever possible in her community and supporting all the local causes. She valued many lifelong friendships and family, both immediate and extended, was everything to her.        

Ivor and Norma spent their summers up north at Thunder Rapids with dear friends Gary & Debbie Simon, who had the store and campground there. That was their happy place until the trip became too difficult. Ivor passed away in 2010, and Norma remained in the family home until two weeks prior to her passing.  

The Funeral Service for Norma was held on Friday, July 10, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Knox United Church in Lanigan, SK. Memorial donations in memory of Norma can be directed to Knox United Church or CNIB.
