Roman Gerwing Obituary

The death of Roman Albert Gerwing, 89 years, of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt and formerly of Lake Lenore occurred on Monday, December 27, 2021.  Roman was born on November 15, 1932 in Humboldt to Ewald and Irene (nee Skalicky) Gerwing.  He grew up in the Lake Lenore area and then went to St. Pete’s at Muenster for High School.  Roman married Viola Stroeder on May 24, 1954 and they raised a family of seven children.  They operated a grocery store for a while and then Roman started farming.  He later worked as a mustard grain buyer for a number of years and then at the Lake Lenore seed plant, eventually returning to farming.  Roman enjoyed the outdoors, spending time fishing and hunting.  He was a very active member of the Lake Lenore Lions Club.  Socializing with family and friends over a card game was a favorite pastime.  Roman dedicated much of his time after retirement to caring for Viola until her death in 2007.  In 2011, he moved to Humboldt where he lived at Caleb Village.  He enjoyed his time there and then in March 2020, requiring more care, he moved to St. Mary’s Villa where he lived until the present.  Roman will be lovingly remembered by his six children, 19 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren:  LORELIE (Allen) Sarauer and family Erin Sarauer-Chute (Ryan Chute) and children Angela, Isabelle, and Wynn, Jen Sarauer, and Kim (Jarod) Jackson and children Piper and Jake; CHRIS (Marilyn) Gerwing and family Lindsey (Jonn) Lovick and children Olivia and Harrison, Eric Gerwing (Liliany), Paige Gerwing (Quinn), and Aiden Gerwing; WARREN (Kathleen) Gerwing and family Terra (Shane) Dyky and children Reese and Grayson, Andrea (Ryley) Anderson and children Mikiya, Ayla and Harlow, and Kyle (Danya) Gerwing; KATHY (Glen) Cross and her family Jason Campbell, Jamie (Lynne) Campbell and children Lucas, Jacob and Henry, and Sherron (Shane) Robinson and children Bennett and Jasmine; BOB Gerwing and family Adam (Aleaha) Gerwing and children Ashton and Harper, and Derek Gerwing (Jaiden); son-in-law Dennis Kiefer and family Kelsey Kiefer, and Dustin (Kellen) Keifer; and PATRICK (Darlene) Gerwing and family Kurtis (Andrea) Stinson and children Zander and Maraya, and Mark Stinson; sister Marina (Frank) Lawrence; sister-in-law Joan Gerwing; and in-laws of the Stroeder family Lucille, Denise, Murray and Duane.  Roman was predeceased by his wife Viola Gerwing; parents Ewald and Irene Gerwing; daughter Lynn Kiefer; brother Ewald “Wally” Gerwing; sister Maxine Gerwing in childhood; parents-in-law Richard  (R.X.) and Eleanor (Nora) Stroeder; and in-laws of the Stroeder family Marcy, Dorothy, Verna, Lenore, and Warren.  The Funeral Mass for Roman was held on Monday, January 3, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, Lake Lenore, celebrated by Fr.
