Sophie Sonja (nee Shumeluk) Skulski

September 28, 1930 ~ October 17, 2020 (age 90)

It is with much sorrow and with hearts at peace that we announce the passing of our Mother, Baba, and Great Baba.  On October 17, 2020, Sophie Sonja Skulski passed away peacefully at age 90 at Cudworth Nursing home with her family by her side.

Sophie was born September 28, 1930, to Peter and Tekla Shumeluk.  She was born and grew up on the farm near Alvena, Sk.  She was the youngest of four children. She attended elementary school in Alvena and attended high school at Saskatoon Technical Collegiate Institute. Education was very important to Sophie.

After graduating high school, she moved to Humboldt, Saskatchewan. It was during that time she met Nick Skulski, the love of her life. The special friendship that grew from that meeting culminated in their marriage in Saskatoon on September 5, 1953. Their union was blessed with 5 children, 3 daughters and 2 sons.  However, one daughter died in infancy. Nick and Sophie made their home in Humboldt throughout their lives together.

Sophie worked as a telephone operator for SaskTel,and was later promoted to Chief Operator until direct dialing was introduced in 1972. She then managed the Lux Theatre in Humboldt. Her final career was as a teller at the Humboldt Credit Union – a position she thoroughly enjoyed.

Sophie lived for a brief time at Preston Park II in Saskatoon before returning to Humboldt.  She spent her final months at the Cudworth Nursing Home. She was treated with respect, dignity and most importantly with love. The staff became her second family.  Our family is forever grateful for the care and love she received.

Sophie was very generous with her time and talents. She was a member of Humboldt CWL, including a term spent as President.  She was active in parish activities including the communion ministry at both St. Augustine’s Parish and the hospital. She also served on the St. Augustine’s Parish Council.  She volunteered at The Good Neighbor Store and in Pastoral Care at the hospital.

Sophie loved spending time with family, playing cribbage, traveling, going to the lake, and having coffee with her close friends. Most of all Sophie loved HUGS!

 Sophie will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her four children, six grandchildren and one

 Brian (Christine) Skulski and their children: Thomas (Brittany) and daughter, Amelia. Susanne (Ty Hering)           and Katherine;

 Karen (Allan) Siermachesky and their children: Alexander and Hannah (Regan Olynick);

 Mary Jane Morrison and daughter, Emma;

 Neil (Heather) Skulski

 She is survived by sisters-in-law: Anne Dobni and Eleanor Skulski, and many nieces and nephews.

Sophie was predeceased by her husband Nick (2011); daughter, Caroline (in infancy, 1961); brother Morris, sisters, Lena Skrumeda (Mike) and Mary Betker (Percy); and her son-in-law, Patrick Morrison (2012).

A Funeral Mass for Sophie was held on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 10:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, SK. Celebrated by Fr.
