Sylvester Dobmeier passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026. He was born on July 23, 1937, to Adam and Elizabeth (nee Worms) Dobmeier. Sylvester, or Joe as his friends knew him, was raised in Pilger in a large family of eight sisters and five brothers. His father was a blacksmith, and from an early age he learned the value of hard work, craftsmanship, and developing hands-on skills that would guide him throughout his life.
After working for a year with the Department of Highways, Sylvester apprenticed in the auto-body trade, travelling back and forth by train between Moose Jaw, where he attended school, to various apprenticeship roles, including Pilger Paint & Body and Boyd Brothers. He earned his autobody certificate at the age of 21 and worked at Boyd Brothers in North Battleford for three years.
In 1957, Sylvester married the love of his life, Loretta Waskowsky of the Muenster area. Together they shared 68 years of marriage and raised three daughters. Sylvester and Loretta moved to Lanigan in May of 1961, where he established Lanigan Auto Body and Auto Wrecking. He was a respected and dedicated business owner in the community for 52 years, known for his strong work ethic, skill, and integrity. In the last years, Sylvester was also jointly involved with the family business of raising elk on part of their acreage.
Outside of his work, Sylvester was actively involved in curling leagues, bonspiels, as well as golf tournaments. It is estimated that he had over 70 years of curling experience from the beginning in school hallways and up until he was over 80 years old. He enjoyed playing cards, shuffleboard, and was known for his innovative mechanical mind. His creativity led him to build and design many projects over the years, including an electric car, golf carts, and various gadgets.
Sylvester is survived by his loving wife, Loretta Dobmeier; daughters Genevieve (Norman) Bryson, Gail (Blaine) Weber, and Valarie (Brent) Olafson; six grandchildren: Corey (Cristelle), Lindsay (Stefan), Brayden (Natalia), Spencer, Parker, and Kylynn; and two great-grandchildren: Isabella and Callan. He is also survived by his siblings Raymond, Margaret (Clendanah), and Sr. Philomena, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. Sylvester was predeceased by his parents Adam and Elizabeth Dobmeier, as well as siblings Herman, Martin, Tony, Andrew, Sr. Regina, Veronica, Francis, Loretta, Marie, and Bertha.
Sylvester will be lovingly remembered for his dedication, generosity, humour, ingenuity, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A Family Gathering was held. Memorial donations in Sylvester’s memory can be directed to Diabetes Canada and Myeloma Canada.
