Rickey was born in Nipawin, Saskatchewan, to Vernon and Ethel Rohne. He was the youngest of six children and the only son. Rickey’s family moved around a lot as his dad Vernon Sr. worked for CP Rail. Taking them first to Beadle, SK, in 1957, then to a farm in Algrove in 1958 and lastly to Archerwill in 1963. Rick left school before graduation and began making a living loading lumber and cement by hand onto rail cars for the Archerwill Co-op. And like many men of this generation, he worked for Midwest Drilling for much of his adult life, beginning in the late 1960s.
He met the love of his life Lori Budz of Nora, SK, and on April 3, 1973, they married in Archerwill. Together they built a life centered on hard work, love, family and eventually faith. In 1982, Rickey and Lori began construction of Rohne’s General Store in Archerwill, which they operated for ten years. He also drove semi for several years and was especially fond of his red Ford semi. He treasured the times Lori would meet him on the road with one or more children in tow just to keep him company on a couple of trips. Later in life, he took tremendous pride in his work as a tractor operator for the RM of Barrier Valley and then with the RM of Three Lakes. He formed many valued friendships in coworkers and council and found great joy in his work until his retirement.
His four daughters were the pride and joy of his life: Kristen Ryea (Shawn), granddaughters Rachel and Dayne; Leta Kendra (Blair), granddaughters Mikaela, Quinn, and Mirra; Beth Anelia (Wayne), granddaughters Makenna and Layla, and grandson Rylan; and Sarah Rebecca (Wade), granddaughter Blake. He is also lovingly remembered by his grandsons Brendan and Jacob. Rickey was predeceased by his parents, Vernon and Ethel Rohne; father-in-law Nick; sisters Ardath and Doris; brothers-in-law Bob, Dobson, Billy, Gordon, and Donny; nephew Jeffrey; and many close friends.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
A Memorial Service for Rickey was held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. from Humboldt Bible Church, officiated by Pastor Sean Brandow. Memorial donations in his memory can be directed to the Humboldt District Health Foundation: General Equipment Fund (Box 1740, Humboldt, SK, S0K 2A0).
