Viola Painter Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Viola (Vi) Painter announce her peaceful passing, at the age of 95, surrounded by loved ones.  Vi kept busy enjoying many hobbies and interests over the years including:  sewing matching dresses for her and her daughters, copying styles from the Sears Catalogue, making beautiful quilts, beautifully painted ceramic pieces, Halloween shenanigans, curling, bowling, gardening, fitness programs. She loved entertaining family and friends, proudly stating she could whip up a meal in no time flat, well into her 80’s.  Vi was no stranger to hard physical labour and always found time to help family when the call came.  With many health challenges Vi and Mark sought out natural alternative therapies, passing this interest on to family.  Vi had a lifelong love of dancing, she thought everyone should know how to dance… and curl.  Watching curling on tv and playing cards passed the time at her final home in Bethany.  Her many interests and passion of doing for others, is her legacy.

Vi was the oldest of six children, born April 23, 1930, to Eva and Peter Peppel, at home in the RM of LeRoy.  She grew up in the St. Gregor/LeRoy area where she attended a one room school (Sjolie).  At a young age Vi started working domestic jobs where she met her future husband Mark Painter of 46 years.

Vi and Mark began their married life together on a farm South of St. Gregor.  They were blessed with eight beautiful children:  Audrey, Dianne, Gerald, Yvonne, Laverne, Alan, Kelly and Jane.  Farm life became a labour of love with abundant gardens, berry picking and filling the cold storage year after year with many yummy preservatives.  Annual fishing trips to Jan Lake, dances at the Silver Dome, curling and many winter nights playing cards were some of their most favourite pastimes.  They also enjoyed traveling to many beautiful destinations.

Vi had a big heart for helping others which led her to fostering children, one of whom is still part of our family, Dan Musso.  In 1974, due to Mark’s health, they relocated to Humboldt along with five of the youngest children.  They embraced Humboldt, becoming active community members, making many lifelong friends, all while Vi worked for St. Elizabeth Hospital.   After Mark’s passing Vi filled her time as a volunteer, obtaining her Pastoral Care Certificate, opening and making early morning coffee at the Gathering Place in Humboldt, proudly working to make it spotless for others to enjoy.  Her volunteering didn’t go unnoticed as she was nominated for a prestigious Provincial Senior Volunteer award, a special gala celebrated with family, friends and dignitaries… a very proud family memory.

Vi will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her family.  Thoughts of her witty one liners and little smirk will linger.

Vi is survived by:
