Raymond Hagen

November 5, 1927 ~ October 31, 2016 (age 88) 88 Years Old

Mr. Raymond Hagen, age 88 of Dalmeny Spruce Manor Special Care Home passed away on Monday, October 31, 2106 at Royal University Hospital Saskatoon.  Raymond was born on November 5, 1927 to Carl and Esther (nee Johnson) Hagen in the Kelvington District.  He attended Nut Lake School and, like many men of his generation, left school after grade four to help on the family farm.  He helped his dad and other farmers in the area until his teens.  Raymond then ventured out to B.C. and worked in a Salmon Cannery and did some logging.  His heart was back in Saskatchewan and the pull of the land brought him back to the Kelvington area.  This move proved very rewarding as it was when he met and married the love of his life, Mary Nicholat, on June 8, 1952.  They were blessed with eight children: one daughter and seven sons. Together they ran a mixed farm on the land Raymond’s grandfather previously owned in the Rose Valley area.  Raymond and Mary worked very well together to make their farm successful.  They loved picking berries together and Mary would always accompany Raymond anywhere he travelled, even if it was just a short trip to get the mail.  They were inseparable.  Raymond thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the farm duties.  The children recall him always whistling while he worked, especially when he would bring the cows home to milk or while he was milking the cows.  Raising a large family and farming in that era was challenging, but they always found time for visiting and a good game of cards with family and friends.  Raymond listened to music and loved to dance.  Often, at weddings and dances Raymond would be dancing all night, either with Mary or others that shared his love to dance. In 1994, Raymond and Mary retired and moved to Muenster.  Raymond continued to do what he loved best, farming, on a casual basis.  He would help Valerie, Dwight or his friend Maurice Strueby during the busy times. When Mary’s health began to fail, she moved to St. Mary’s Villa where Raymond continued to be attentive to her.  He would spend every day with her; he was a very devoted husband. If you knew Raymond, you knew where he stood on any number of topics.  Raymond will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his seven children, 18 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren: Valerie (Gordon) Olynick of Quill Lake and family Falen (Greg) Nelson and son Gavin of Tisdale and Garett Olynick (Chelsea Pacquette) of Quill Lake; Dwight (Barbara) Hagen of Archerwill and family Darnell (Donna)  Hagen and children Ella and Freya of Saskatoon, Somer (Shawn)  Wourms and children Warren, Austin, Kenton, Serena and Evan of Grayson, Lance (Courtney) Hagen of Saskatoon, Adriel Hagen (Stacy Crump) of  Saskatoon and Whitney (Brad) Meiklejohn and son Oscar of Saskatoon; Elvis (Maryann Major) Hagen of Muenster and family Shannon Barth and children Callum, Hailey and Jackson of Brampton, ON, Cory Hagen of Saskatoon and sons Kyle and Tyler, Greg Hagen of Vancouver, BC,  Nicholas Hagen-Major and Christopher Hagen-Major both of Muenster; Gerry (Denise) Hagen of Saskatoon; Lyle (Bernadette) Hagen and family Katelynn, Alyssa and Derek of Saskatoon; Curtis Hagen of Yellowknife, NWT; Nevin (Linda) Hagen and family Reese and Liam of Fort McMurray, AB; daughter-in-law Angela Hagen and granddaughter Savannah of Saskatoon; two  sisters Irene Donald of Kelvington and Dagne Hunter of San Diego, CA; one brother Ivan Hagen of Winnipeg, MB; brother-in-law Garry Elliott of Invermere, BC and by many nieces and nephews.
